Subterranean termites and wood decay

Formosan and eastern subterranean termites are economically important pests throughout the world. Foraging workers of both these species have a strong preference for wood that has been attacked by fungi. They are specifically attracted to brown rot, white rot and litter-rot fungi. But it is not actually the fungi that influence their feeding preferences; it is the chemical byproducts produced by the fungi as they digest the wood.
