Jan. 1--The Soo Locks will remain open up to 10 additional days this month to allow supplemental shipments of iron ore and coal to reach lower Great Lakes ports.
The locks -- which allow ships up to 1,000 feet long to navigate from Lake Superior through the St. Mary's River and a 21-foot drop to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron -- were set to close Jan. 15.
But under a decision announced Wednesday by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes iron ore carriers are expected to move about one million additional tons of iron ore pellets through the locks at Sault ...
