Earth has about 250 species of poisonous snakes. Snake venom is meant to kill prey, but snakes will bite people who are preceived as a threat.
Snake venom is a toxic form of saliva that is injected into an animal through hollow teeth called fangs. The venom stops or kills the victim so the snake can eat it. Snakes generally eat small animals, such as frogs, rats, birds, and lizards that they swallow whole.
There are four main kinds of venomous snakes: cobras and their relatives, sea snakes, true vipers, and pit vipers. All poisonous snakes don't look alike. They come in many sizes, shapes, colors, and patterns.
