A Teesside man searching for details of his father's wartime experiences has unearthed a rich seam of Teesside's history.
David Van Oord's Dutch-born father Gerrit was a teenage crewman on a cargo ship which was sunk by a Luftwaffe bomber in Tees Bay on November 11, 1940.
He was one of 27 people who survived the attack in which one life was lost - the third engineer Thorleif Rein Olsen, who was unable to get above decks when it went down.
But there is no record of Gerrit Van Oord on the crew list.
