PITY the poor French and Italian farmers who harvest truffles each autumn. This year has been a disaster. It was the long hot summer that really put paid to the crop of these underground fungi.

Deep in the heart of the soil in the oak forests, they shrivelled and in some cases died. Not even the most dedicated hunter with his attendant dog, or specially trained pig, have been able to collect more than a few handfuls.
