Union construction workers began cutting ice blocks from Lake Phalen on Friday, ending an uneasy wait for material to build the St. Paul Winter Carnival Ice Palace.
Ice Palace cochairman David Crary said that barring blizzards or other work-canceling events, volunteers should have enough time to construct the original design for a 27,000-block palace and courtyard across W. 7th Street from the Xcel Energy Center.
St. Paul's first ice castle since 1992 is scheduled to open Jan. 22 and to close after activities connected with the National Hockey League All-Star Game at the arena on Feb. 8.
