What is your favorite bug? A jumping bean? A praying mantis? A luna moth? Mine is the firefly. On our small, Indiana farm, fireflies twinkle like magical stars on a summer night. We chase them around seeing who can catch the most, then we watch in wonder as they flash their lights like lightning.

Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are found all over the world. Some are common; some are rare. Some are small; some are very large.

From the dawn of time, we have been chasing fireflies. As early as the Middle Ages, alchemists were using fireflies in a potion to make a special water lamp that was claimed to light up the darkest night.
