Protesters gathered outside the San Francisco opening of Cirque du Soleil's Alegria on November 6 to launch a series of demonstrations against the Montreal-based company, alleging former acrobat Matthew Cusick was fired because he has HIV. The protests are designed to bring attention to a federal discrimination suit filed by the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.
"Matthew Cusick's firing is based on ignorance and bias," said Lambda's Michael Adams. "Cirque du Soleil portrays itself as a friend of the gay community, and these protests are designed to show people Cirque is engaging in [HIV] discrimination.
