A report by the Environmental Working Group has made PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) the poster child of the anti-farmed-salmon contingent. While the report was neither peer-reviewed by scientists nor published in any scientific journal, EWG's allegation that a small sample of farmed salmon showed PCB contamination still makes headlines and fuels consumer concerns about farmed salmon.
PCBs are byproducts of industrial processes. Because of their ability to be transported by water, air and animals, PCBs are found almost everywhere on earth, even in the polar ice caps.
