KISANGANI, Democratic Republic of Congo _ When the Kiboko, a 150-foot-long rusting barge, docked in this fabled jungle city on Christmas Day, second officer Mike Kahenga used grand terms to describe the event.
After five years of bloody civil war, he said, "the opening of the river is a symbol of reunification, that it's possible to have one Congo." But there was much more for Kahenga in the Kiboko's trip. For the first time, Kahenga was able to meet his girlfriend's parents and ask for her hand in marriage. Her parents accepted.
