Nobody knows the exact time when rock 'n' roll was born, or the exact place. You might say it wasn't so much born as it just evolved.
But the city of Memphis has settled on one day _ July 5, 1954 _ when 19-year-old Elvis Presley recorded "That's All Right" at Sun Studio. It follows, then, that rock 'n' roll will have its 50th birthday in 2004.
Memphis plans to mark the anniversary with a yearlong celebration, beginning with events on New Year's Eve around Beale Street, the city's renowned entertainment district. When Dick Clark ushered in 2004 with his annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC, Memphis had a co-starring role. The ...
