One of the most enduring images of early Arizona is the solitary prospector seeking his fortune in gold in the inhospitable Sonoran Desert. Romance surrounds the idea that incredible wealth lies hidden in rugged peaks, narrow box canyons, or shifting sands of desert dunes. However, the myth of Arizona gold is not matched by reality. Although Arizona has some rich gold deposits, the state has produced far more "lost-mine" stories than spectacular mineral specimens.
