In "The Professional Adrift in the Victorian Novel: (1), Agnes Grey," I argued that Anne Bronte depicts her heroine as a professional who struggles in a society that does not recognize her as such, governessing not having been totally established as a profession. In New Grub Street, the problem is the opposite one. Another novel focussing on work, New Grub Street also presents the world of the professions as a health- and even life-threatening one. Again adrift in an adverse environment, the professionals portrayed are, too, engaged in an unequal battle between work and the human spirit, and find themselves preoccupied with how to cope with their predicaments as much as ...
