The parliamentary vote on a motion by the Canadian Alliance to retain the traditional definition of marriage took place in Ottawa on the night of September 16.
It was defeated by the narrowest of margins, 137-132, with nearly a third of the Liberal caucus supporting the Alliance motion.
The vote however close, clearly showed an evolution in Liberal thinking. Four years earlier the same motion had passed by a vote of 216-55.
