People with more money than time picked mutual funds, the accepted wisdom being that hiring a professional money manager came with the territory. Companies dropped large amounts of cash into funds, essentially outsourcing their investment decisions. The rise of individual retirement accounts further fueled the growth of mutual funds. It's estimated that half the U.S. population owns mutual funds.
