Many American Moravians and especially Lutherans believe that a tense, face-to-face dispute between Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg that occurred on December 30, 1742 o.s. in a house in Philadelphia was the foundation for bad relations between the two denominations in this country. Zinzendorf was a disputable Lutheran and leader of the ecumenical Moravians at the time, while Muhlenberg had just come to North America and was on his way toward becoming what many consider the "father" of the Lutheran denomination on the continent. ...
