TEHRAN (AFP/Reuters/ DPA/AP) - Several thousand people were killed yesterday when an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted the historic city of Bam in southeastern Iran.

Kerman province MP Ali Hashemi said that the death toll from the earthquake could still go up although the regional interior ministry refused to confirm or provide specific figures.

Two thousand people are confirmed dead in the earthquake but the toll is certain to rise, a senior official from Kerman province said.

"So far we can only confirm 2,000 dead but the number is sure to rise," he told Reuters by telephone.
