THE celebration of New Year has acquired religious, cultural, and social features around the world. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all use different calendars and celebrate the new year on different dates.

In the West January 1 is the accepted date. The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, begins on the first day of Tishri, which can fall anytime from September 6 to October 5 in the Western Calendar.
