DM City Center, the theater on West 55th Street in Manhattan with ornate Moorish architecture, has played a prominent role in New York's dance history. Built in 1924, it was restored by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in 1943, providing a home for the New York City Ballet and New York City Opera until both moved to Lincoln Center. Now City Center remains a vital 2,750-seat theater complex for resident and touring dance companies. So it was fitting that Arlene Shuler, a former dancer, became the new president and CEO of City Center as of June 2003.
