It looked like a typical day at any youth center in America: Boys playing chess. A high schooler with a fantasy game. Kids flipping Uno cards and laughing.
But this was the Eugene Public Library - and not a book in the room.
This is not your grandmother's library. Public libraries everywhere are redefining themselves to draw young users, and the new downtown library is no exception: Internet access and music CDs are all the rage now and - so much for "Quiet, please" - even a garage-rock band has rattled the stacks in recent months.
Tuesday was game day, an opportunity for kids to burn off steam ...
