Nineteen renowned beer experts from four countries convened at the Weyermann Malting Company in Bamberg, Germany on November 15, one day after the closing of the Nurnberg 2003 Brau-Beviale for an unusual event: A comparative tasting of four almost identical Pilsner beers.
The only variation among these beers was in the barley variety from which the base malt was made. In each grain bill, the base malt made up exactly 90%. The remaining grain bill was made up of, half and half, of Weyermann Carahell/Carafoam and Acidulated Malt. The tasters were presented with beers from the following four base malts, in that order: Alexis, Barke, Scarlett, and Steffi.
