MEDICAL
AWARD: Dr. Aaron I. Vinik, research director of the Strelitz Diabetes Institutes of Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, has been awarded the Southern Medical Association's Seale Harris Award. The award recognizes research accomplishments in the field of metabolism, endocrinology or nutrition, and contributions to the better understanding of the biological changes occurring in diabetes. Vinik, a resident of Norfolk and professor of internal medicine at EVMS, was honored in part for his co-discovery of the gene INGAP, which has reversed diabetes in animals. Human trials are now under way.
