New York notwithstanding, figures released last week show that both newspaper circulation -- the audited number of copies sold -- and readership -- consumers who were surveyed -- are down.
Stunning circulation gains by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post were offset by not only depressed circulation numbers nationwide, but an admission by the industry's trade association that its reading of a consumer survey showed that not only are fewer papers being purchased, fewer are being read as well.
