The budget problems of German universities stir much-needed debate
TOURISTS visiting Berlin have been treated to some strange sights recently: students raking up leaves, running naked through Christmas fairs, or holding seminars under the Brandenburg Gate. Similar media-savvy protests against budget cuts were staged in Frankfurt, Gottingen and Munich. The protests have triggered a debate about universities that is unlikely to abate soon.
