Wisconsin has taken in nearly a thousand cattle during the last five years from the Canadian province where mad cow disease has been found, raising concerns that the deadly brain ailment might be discovered in the state, agriculture officials say.
State veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt said the imports from Alberta create a risk, albeit a small one, that the disease is here.
"It could happen," Ehlenfeldt said. "I wouldn't be totally surprised, no. Is it likely? I don't know how you put a number on that."
