When Rabbi Max Weiss and members of Beth Tikvah Congregation realized their 100-year-old Torah scroll needed major repairs, they could have followed the usual procedure and appropriated money to repair it.
Instead, the Hoffman Estates congregation decided to turn the project into a fund-raiser.
"All Torahs should be in a kosher condition," says Jackie Mann, vice president of ways and means. "No letters should be rubbed off, no rips in the paper or marks of any kind. We have several Torah scrolls, but picked one that is used regularly."
