Jan. 13--Body armor makers are cranking out equipment around the clock to meet the military's growing needs in Iraq.
A controversial shortage of armor has been a life-or-death issue amid continuing attacks against U.S. troops. Going into the war, Army planners thought combat foot soldiers would be the only personnel to need state-of-the-art protective vests, but the insurgency forced the Army to outfit every soldier on the ground.
The order has suppliers of body armor and armored Humvee vehicles working on the double.
