Is Wisconsin, the nation's ninth top live animal and red meat producer, doing all it can to protect consumers from mad cow disease?
State agriculture officials as well as representatives from the meat industry say feeding regulations, testing and processing safeguards make the appearance of mad cow in Wisconsin highly unlikely.
Rod Nilsestuen, secretary of the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, said Wisconsin meat is safe.
"We have a sophisticated and extensive system to assure the purity and cleanliness of our food in Wisconsin," Nilsestuen said.
