Chile and Ecuador are locked in a fierce trade dispute following the Ecuadorian government's imposition of restrictions on Chilean MDF imports.

In July this year Ecuador imposed a limit of 8,000[m.sup.3]/year on MDF exported to the country by giant Chilean panel maker Masisa SA, following complaints from Ecuador's only producer, Aglomerados Cotopaxi SA, about excessive imports.

Cotopaxi, of Quito, claims Masisa flooded the small Ecuadorian market with MDF. In October 2002 the group raised the monthly volume of MDF it was exporting from Chile tenfold from an average of 1,000[m.sup.3] to 10,000[m.sup.3].
