The blue-green wall is going up in downtown St. Paul, a massive 9-foot-high battlement built of ice that will keep the riffraff out of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Ice Palace.
This isn't the way good King Boreas would want it.
I have attended Winter Carnival events my whole life, and the only thing charming about freezing your keister off is the pleasure of doing it with your friends, neighbors and fellow citizens - and doing it for free.
This year, the carnival is building an $8 million Ice Palace across from the Xcel Energy Center that will open Jan. 22 and could draw a million or more people.
