Eating dysfunctions are recognized as important problems in college women (1) because of their significant association with other psychological problems, their significant impact on physical health, and their tendency to become chronic. (2) Although some college women come forward with eating disorders of clinically significant proportions, many others possess subclinical eating dysfunctions, or "partial syndromes," (3) representing a continuum of severity and often falling short of criteria for eating disorders as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-Fourth Edition (DSM-IV).
