As 2003 winds down, all too quickly, the inevitable question pops up: What kind of year has it been? It's been a year like any other, one of change, both predictable and unimagined. Here's a recap: This year has seen the growing strength of CVS, the completion of Rite Aid's recovery and yet another year in the remarkable run of Walgreens.
It has seen Eckerd, gathering momentum only a year ago, stumble badly on its road to recovery, to the point that parent J.C. Penney appears determined to rid itself of the drug chain. The questions at year's end: Will Eckerd ultimately be divested? If so, who will buy it? CVS? Jean Coutu? Some combination of the two? Some party ...
