Jan. 16--WASHINGTON -- Politics is the only contact sport where beating expectations can be more important than actually winning -- and by that measurement, Howard Dean suddenly is losing badly.
Three days before the Iowa caucuses, front-runner Dean is sagging in Iowa and New Hampshire, while rivals Wesley Clark, Dick Gephardt and John Kerry are surging.
The size of Dean's collapse is most easily measured in New Hampshire, where his lead over Clark has gone from 17 to 5 points in the last four days.
