NUMEROUS STUDIES have shown that a woman's marital status is associated with her alcohol consumption. Heavy drinkers are found more frequently among unmarried women than among wives and widows, and, although divorced women are sometimes found to drink more than those who are married, they are always reported to drink less than single women (Fillmore et al., 1994; Wilsnack and Cheloha, 1987; Wilsnack et al., 1984; Wilsnack and Wilsnack, 1995).
