BY NOW EVEN schoolkids know that houseplants can absorb indoor pollutants and clean the air while at the same time producing fresh oxygen for winter-weary, housebound humans. What still remains a secret is how easy it is to start a houseplant jungle with little experience and even less expense.

All you need to start most houseplants is a glass of water and a friend willing to share a four-inch section of a stem cutting. Pop a plant cutting into the glass of water, let it sit until roots form and you've become a gardener.
