Plants need sunlight to grow, and there's no denying that at this time of year, at this latitude, there isn't enough of it.
The days are so short and the sun is so low in the sky that most houseplants sulk and refuse to do anything. They stop flowering. Some drop their leaves completely. Gardeners sometimes try to revive these plants by giving them more water and fertilizer, but that's often just the coup de grace.
