Jan. 16--Pierce County defended its ban on minicasinos before the state Court of Appeals on Thursday, arguing it's a public good allowed by state law.
"It is recriminalizing something that has been criminal in the past," said deputy prosecutor Bertha Fitzer.
But that doesn't account for the "enormous financial damage" the ban has inflicted on Paradise Village Bowl & Casino in Parkland, countered Lois Meltzer, the minicasino's attorney.
"Pierce County had a responsibility to look at what it was doing," she said.
