Dear Readers:
Schools and school districts are under increasing pressure to make sure federal dollars are used to implement programs and practices proven effective by scientifically based research. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) mentions scientifically based research 110 times. The phrase has become so common that it has earned its own acronym: SBR.
So ... what is scientifically based research, or SBR? Who is responsible for doing it? And how can school and district leaders determine the adequacy of SBR claims for a particular program or practice?
