This year marks the third anniversary of the unique operation connected with the detection and lifting of the sunken fleet ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) Kursk. As I see it, the experience of search and rescue operations and organization of all-round support for the Special Purpose Expedition (SPE) merit close attention and a thorough study.
Theoretically all operations the Northern Fleet (NF) pursued in that period could be divided into four stages: first, search and rescue efforts; second, preparations for the lifting; third, the lifting itself; and fourth, the sub's transportation and docking.
