A FRIEND of Francis Bacon has made a donation of the artist's work worth [pounds sterling]20 million to the Tate Gallery.
The 1,200 sketches are one of the most generous donations in the Tate's 107-year history.
Canadian Barry Joule, a neighbour of Irish-born Bacon, said he wanted to give something back to London, which has been his home for 25 years.
Joule, 49, became the artist's handyman, chauffeur and friend for 14 years after he repaired a television aerial for him. The two men lived next door to each other in south Kensington.
As the [pounds sterling]20 million worth of sketches were piled up in boxes ...
