SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cost is not a significant factor to cardiologists choosing between drug eluting stents (DES) and bare metal stents (BMS), according to a survey of invasive cardiologists conducted by Medcompare. Survey respondents indicated that price is only rarely a consideration in the decision to use DES over BMS for angioplasty procedures.
Considering that DES can cost three times more than BMS, an added cost not always covered by insurance companies, it wasn't previously clear if price would influence DES usage.
