Galveston County Federal Credit Union left out the teller windows at its newest branch.
Lobby customers at the League City, Tex., branch are directed to five sleek machines on which, at the push of a button, tellers appear over two-way video. Three tellers operate the machines from a back office; customers make deposits and receive cash through pneumatic tubes.
The system was installed last August. "Our customers are getting used to it," said Brad Jackson, a vice president at the $120-million asset Texas City credit union. "People don't have to have the face-to-face contact." He estimates annual savings of as much as $60,000 a year.
