Over one-third of all pianos sold this past year were sold outside of a dealer's store. College sales, armory sales, hotel sales, and various "perimeter sales" still account for a large portion of a piano dealer's business.
I recently made a few calls to some dealers to get their take on the profitability of these sales and whether anyone other than the manufacturer was benefiting from them. I think they are still viable, for the most part, and if a dealer runs them correctly and with integrity, they work.
