There are many ways to describe the current state of mathematics education in the United States. It would be tempting simply to recount the success of math reform over the last 10 years. After all, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards (1989, 2000) have been the centerpiece of mathematics education in the United States for more than a decade, and their influence has been apparent in the growth in reform-based research, curricula, and methods of assessment. Added to that, the NCTM standards have moved all but one state in the country to adopt new content or curriculum standards in mathematics as of 2001.
