Volvo Car Corp. is increasing outsourcing, using every possible spare square meter of plant space and speeding up its line to squeeze more production out of its Ghent plant.
Volvo wants the Belgian plant to produce 270,000 units a year, up from about 157,000 units in 2003. To reach the goal the plant is adding a third shift and increasing its work force to 5,100 employees from 3,700.
The plant has undergone a ?335 million upgrade that focused on improving the body shop, final assembly shop and the paint shop.

Ghent is taking over capacity Volvo will lose once it stops building at NedCar in Born, Netherlands.
