Though a lot of wooden trawlers built in the old St. Augustine, Fla., shipyards during the heyday of shrimping are still towing nets in the South Atlantic, there are fewer of them every year.
Fewer still haven't been C-Flexed or otherwise had their cypress planking glassed over. The 38-year-old Capt Jack, which works out of Brunswick, Ga., is one of the veterans.
"It's a good boat; it's a good sea boat." says owner and skipper Thurmond Kern.
Kern's son, Matt, 38. who worked on the boat when he was growing up, says he's seen green water come over the bow more than once. "Oh yeah," he says. "Coming over the stern, too. Waves would be chasing you ...
