Jan. 22--SAN FRANCISCO -- The recording industry yesterday sued 532 unknown people accused of swapping copyrighted songs online, in the first round of lawsuits since its legal campaign against music pirates suffered a setback last month.

In filing its largest round of antipiracy lawsuits, the Recording Industry Association of America, which represents the major record labels, sued "John Does," identified only by the numerical Internet protocol address affiliated with their personal computers.
