Did you know that salt used to be more valuable than gold? Cities were built where salt could be found easily. Wars were fought over it. Pioneers went in search of it. Why?
Salt was so important because it was once the only way to keep food from going bad. Salt preserved foods. Freezing and canning had not been invented yet. Salt was very rare. It was so important and prized that only rich people had salt shakers on their tables. Roman soldiers were even paid with salt!
