Coup No Big Coup for CNN

Cable News Network rode the crest of a temporary ratings wave last week, but its numbers did not come close to those achieved earlier in the year, during the Persian Gulf war.

Thanks to the failed coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, the network pulled 24-hour average rating of 1.6, with a 5 share on Monday and a 24-hour average of 1.7 on Tuesday. Wednesday's numbers were expected to be slightly higher, but they were not available at press time.

Those are the highest ratings the network has seen since March 18, and are triple the 0.5 daily average the network achieved in June and July.
