THE MAN behind the controversial Atkins diet may not have known the true secrets of its success, it emerged today.

Dr Robert Atkins said his diet, which he invented in 1992, worked because of the way the body burns fat and protein.

However, scientists say new evidence indicates this is not so. They say the secret is the protein, which acts as an appetite suppressant.

The BBC is to reveal the truth behind the Atkins diet in tonight's Horizon programme, and experts claim the findings could revolutionise the way we think about dieting.
